Troubled Teens

Wilderness Therapy

With all of the choices and prescriptions people face to ease emotional and physical ailments, nature may not be the first on one's list. If an individual or family is facing a crisis it may seem more practical to reach for an antidepressant or similar type of drug. Familial strife warrants fast action and immediate results, but many times there are major holes in overmedicating a problem. A lot of times, it is better to revert to a more natural way such as wilderness therapy, to heal a problem.

Summit Achievement, located amongst the mountains in the serene town of Stow, Maine, understands that last statement to fullest. They are a residential treatment center focused on rehabilitating broken teens that have found themselves in difficult positions, while maintaining an academic foreground. They focus on wilderness therapy instead of pharmaceutical drugs to deal with issues that teens may be facing.

Teens these days are facing so many options and many of them are not ideal. Falling into poor habits such as promiscuity, drug use, lying, stealing and low self-esteem can lead to the destruction of what could have been a fruitful life. When these issues become too large to handle or when families want to put a stop to behaviors such as the ones above that are coming out the woodwork in their child's life Summit Achievement is a great choice.

Therapists, teachers and those who guide the teens through wilderness therapy believe in working with teens to recognize and accept past mistakes and the behaviors that made them as well as learning from them to create a better future. This is done through traditional classroom schooling three days a week coupled with individual therapy sessions and ones shared with their family through phone sessions. The rest of the week is dedicated to an outdoor expedition such as rock climbing or hiking that they complete within a team. With an expected arrival at the end of the week, and expedition debriefing brings a close to the week as teens talk about what they learned. Students are also expected to complete daily chores before embarking on their day.

It can be devastating to watch a son or daughter make decisions that bring about emotional or physical hurt. It can also be exhausting trying to figure out ways to bring a family back together. Sometimes the cure is not found within prescription drugs, it is found through a more natural approach such as wilderness therapy at Summit Achievement to bring teens back to their feet and a family back together.
