ACADEMICS
Semester students participate in formal classroom academic instruction with teaching professionals from Monday through Friday with a two hour evening study hall five days per week. The Summit Semester curriculum emphasizes learning educational content as well as learning vital study skills such as organization and time management. In addition, the Summit School, in conjunction with therapists, works with students to improve social skills and learning habits that are necessary for success in a traditional school setting such as an ability to positively contribute to the classroom environment, academic self-esteem, self-discipline, motivation and healthy interactions with peers and teachers.
Licensed by the State of Maine as a non-traditional private school, Summit Semester places primary emphasis on education. Summit Semester's core curriculum spans five major subject areas: math, English, social studies, science and physical education.
The objective of Semester's academic program is to help students:
- Improve attitude towards academics and take responsibility for academic progress.
- Learn new study skills and strategies that will increase their academic independence and their opportunities for further study.
- Enhance their current academic standing and to facilitate a smooth transition into their next school setting.
- Fill credit deficits.
- Earn a high school diploma (in partnership with local schools)
- Follow a sending school curriculum in order to rejoin the sending school with minimal academic disruption.
Upon enrollment students are assigned an academic advisor who communicates and coordinates with schools, referring professionals, families and the student in order to assess and best serve the needs of each student. An individualized academic program is then designed to target subject areas, credit deficits and skills that require improvement or are essential to develop for success in more rigorous academic environments.
Distance Courses, tutoring, SAT prep, and SAT testing are available.
Upon completion of the program, students receive a comprehensive academic transcript documenting hours in the classroom, grades earned and transferable credits earned while in the program.
Students working outside Semester's core curriculum may be subject to additional fees for tutoring, testing, distance coursework registration, or other services.
