Schools for Troubled Teens

Teens find themselves facing many decisions these days. Whether it may be big or small there are plenty of things standing in the way of a healthy life for a teen. Things such as promiscuity, depression, drug use or lying can be the demise of an individual and their family. There is nothing worse either, than watching families fall apart because of an uncontrollable situation.

It can be hard to see or even accept the red flags of son or daughter in trouble. And once a problem is recognized finding the right treatment options can be a hard match to make. Prescription pills such as antidepressants or weekly, outpatient therapy may not be reaching deeply enough to fix a problem. This is where schools for troubled teens come in. It may be easy to overlook, but sending a loved one away to a school that specializes in behavioral problems could be the best thing one ever did for their family.

No one wants to admit that they are in trouble and no one wants to send their child away to any of the schools for the troubled teens. Sometimes though doing so is the best way to show someone that they are loved. When teenagers can't accept responsibility for the decisions that they have made that have landed them with too many sexual partners, records at the police station, poor grades in school and a lack of self-acceptance they tend to go deeper down the path of destruction. One of the schools for troubled teens, Summit Achievement, located in the mountains of Stow, Maine is a home away from home that focuses on rehabilitating an individual and putting his or her life back together.

They couple traditional schooling in a residential setting with individual, family and group therapy. Once a week students set out in small groups tot take on the challenge of three day outdoor expedition, such as rock climbing or canoeing. Students then return back to Summit Achievement to debrief what they learned by taking on a challenge and reaching a goal.

By being taken out of their comfort zone and learning to accept the behaviors that caused the issues that they are facing now, teens can learn to forgive the past and move on. Weekly therapy sessions allow them to work within themselves and their family to come to an understanding of who they were and who they are now. Summit Achievement, may be under the category of schools for troubled teens, but the therapists, wilderness guides, dorm parents and teachers all take their role of nurturing the bright students who walk through their doors who have just taken a bad turn in their life very seriously. Their program has a great success rate and families who have found themselves in a less than ideal situation can finally begin to heal themselves.
