Summit Achievement is unique among typical wilderness programs in that it provides a complete residential campus and traditional academic coursework along with challenging adventure activities. Though the many program offerings are described in detail in the web pages that follow, visitors to our website may find it helpful to review the distinguishing features of our program summarized below.

Program Design
  • Innovative, therapeutic program combines the best features of a wilderness program with the best features of a special-needs boarding school by integrating a residential milieu and traditional academic instruction with outdoor adventure-based therapy.

  • Open enrollment policy allows students to enroll at any time throughout the year with a flexible length of stay (usually 6-8 weeks) based on the student's performance and personal growth.

  • Level system provides students with a visible measure of their progress through the program.

  • Residential component assists students in preparing to return home or transition to a boarding school setting.

  • Program is fully licensed by the State of Maine as a Residential Treatment Center with Mental Health and Substance Abuse Certification.

Therapeutic Services and Treatment Planning
  • Masters level clinicians coordinate each student's treatment program; documented treatment plan and discharge summary are provided to parents.

  • Weekly telephone conference calls include the student, parents, and therapist.

  • Unlike some wilderness programs, Summit Achievement utilizes an ally-based counseling approach that focuses on the importance of establishing a connection with each student; staff approach students in a respectful and affirming manner, offering caring support for their efforts.

Academic Services
  • Unlike many wilderness programs, a strong academic curriculum is provided by a separate instructional staff. Students are able to continue academic coursework earning transferable credit accepted by most private and public schools.

  • Academic program is licensed by the State of Maine as a non-traditional private school; student graduates have been accepted into a wide range of private and public schools following completion of the program.

"My son arrived at Summit with an attitude. Camp was not easy for him. It was full of changes, as well as mental challenges. It encompassed a lifestyle that was foreign to him, and he had to adjust and adjust quickly. Once he resigned himself to accepting his fate, he really got into the program and began to flourish. I cannot say enough good things about Summit nor recommend it highly enough. Our son turned his life around immediately from what it was; the change was unbelievable! The morale of this story is that we do not know what we would have done without Summit and, if you have reached that state in your life, trust me and call Summit immediately."
